The rock stacks are formed due to erosion. The unrelenting weather coming from the Southern Ocean disintegrated the soft limestone forming caves in the cliffs and later became arches.

In time, the arches disintegrated and transforming into rock stacks standing up to 45 metres high. It was then called Sow and Piglets until 1922 it was named to The Apostles for tourism and eventually became what it is now known as the Twelve Apostles even if there are only 9 rock stacks to offer.

In July 2005, the 50-metre rock stack disrupted and leaving eight rock stacks standing against the waves.
